How to Find Good Used Medical Equipment

Once you have embraced the concept of used medical equipment as a valid way to equip a medical office, especially those parts of the office with either limited or no therapeutic/diagnostic utility, next comes the hurdle of finding appropriate equipment. In short, you seek people who either no longer have a need for such things, or people who have so many of these things that they are willing to sell them at a real bargain price.

That initial class of medical consumer can be found on the Internet in abundance. You should start with online auction sites. Be careful of what you are bidding on, however. Most medical equipment sold online is without warranty, so let the buyer beware. In the case of chairs, lamps and carts, the chances of a piece of medical equipment being misrepresented are small. The deals and savings can be fantastic; just remember to include the cost of shipping in your calculations. E-bay in particular has a wonderfully useful search function that allows you to choose to search results based on distance from your address. You may be able to eliminate shipping costs by going to pick up the used medical equipment yourself.

Now, who is in that other category, the ones who have so much medical equipment that they are selling it at greatly reduced prices? These are massive institutions that have medical equipment, but medicine is not their primary job: namely the U.S. Military. All used military goods are classed as equipment in need of decommissioning (guns, tanks, aircraft carriers) which are of limited use in the modern medical practice. On the other hand, the military equipment that has no need of decommissioning can be purchased by anyone and is usually of good quality and completely serviceable. In this vein there are exam tables, instrument trays, stools and surgical lights.

The main problem with the purchase of military surplus is that there are no delivery options. You have to go get what you are buying. Bidding is now done online, but make sure you are looking at equipment located at a depot that is accessible to you or your agents. Otherwise, that great deal you got on an exam table could become a shipping nightmare that costs you more than the piece of used medical equipment itself.
