Reconditioned and Used Medical Equipment Can Be A Good Value
Equipping a hospital or medical practice can be expensive. Everyone in charge of purchase decisions, whether it is an administrative board or a medical director, needs the best quality equipment possible, but must also keep cost constraints in mind. When medical equipment of equal quality is found, price will almost certainly be the final deciding factor. There are times when this strategy is perfectly appropriate, and when spending more does not necessarily mean buying more.
One way to lower equipment costs is to find online medical equipment vendors. These vendors do not have the overhead costs that most brick and mortar stores have, and are therefore generally able to offer lower prices overall. Additionally, reconditioned or pre-owed equipment is generally a good value. When these two circumstances combine—online vendors of reconditioned or used medical equipment—the cost savings can be considerable.
There are times when it makes sense to purchase used or refurbished medical equipment. For example, if the technology behind a piece of machinery is stable, a used piece of equipment can be a good purchase. Although new ultrasound technologies are developing every day, standard portable ultrasound machines would fall into this category. The new technologies use different machines, and do not limit the functionality or usefulness of the existing ultrasound machine. Further, if a piece of equipment is relatively low volume, or its use does not require much wear and tear on the machine, again a used piece of equipment can be a good purchase. In the case of an ultrasound machine, it is the keyboard and transducer which are most often in need of repair, and both are fairly easy to replace and/or upgrade.
Reconditioned machinery or used medical equipment has generally been serviced and restored by the manufacturer, who typically certifies that the equipment will work as well as it did when it was new. The manufacturer will also typically supply copies of any owner’s manuals and provide training on the equipment. In cases such as these, it is easy to see that the main difference between purchasing reconditioned equipment and new equipment is the price.
